Our Story

Sobecks' Sunset Acres is located on the edge of Alcona County between Lake Huron and Hubbard Lake. The farm is run by Melissa and Anthony along with their son Matthew. Anthony grew up just down the road from his great grandparents and grandparents who were the original owners of the farm. Spending much of his childhood on this very property eventually moving to the farm in his teenage years.  The property was purchased from Anthony's mom in the winter of 2013 making our son the 5th generation to grow up on this land.

Melissa is no stranger to farm life growing up in Presque Isle County on a hobby farm coming from a longline of farmers and gardeners.

Both Melissa and Anthony also work full-time jobs outside of the farm itself, Anthony is a Diesel Mechanic and Melissa is a Social Worker.

After our son was born, we went out in October searching for the perfect pumpkin. Melissa had fond memories of going to Karsten's Pumpkin Patch in Rogers City and searching for hours in what felt like a giant pumpkin patch owned by a family friend who also happened to be one of her 4-H leaders. We weren't able to find anything like this or pumpkins for reasonable price. This is where it all began that next spring, we planted our first pumpkin patch in memory of Melissa's former 4-H leader Kathy. Each year we pride ourselves on producing pumpkins perfect for decorating and reasonably priced.

In 2017 Melissa started a small cut flower garden selling bouquets off a small wagon at the end of the driveway. They would sell out each day, in 2021 we invested in a small shed to help keep the flowers from tipping over in the wind. What started out as 25 plants is now over 4000 plants in the spring of 2024. Melissa enjoys growing flowers and selling them from our roadside stand as well as doing flower arrangements for local weddings.

In the spring of 2023, our neighbor who was known for his exceptional "Kandy Korn" posted that he was going to retire from sweet corn farming, this was Matthew's favorite food! We couldn't let the legacy of Kandy Korn in Spruce end. We purchased the equipment and seed and moved the growing operation to our farm. We planted our first Kandy Korn in May however, the weather did not cooperate, it wasn't until our 2nd planting of the season that we had success. We sold of first picking of Kandy Korn in August of 2023. We look forward to many years of providing the same Kandy Korn that Kenny produced for years in our community. What many say is the best sweet corn in the north!

We look forward to providing our community with quality produce and beautiful flowers in the upcoming season.
